QNLM Promotes B & R Cooperation
QNLM endeavors to promote exchange and cooperation with the Belt and Road countries. By conducting technical cooperation, organizing personnel training and forums, establishing overseas research centers, QNLM has made active response to the Belt and Road Initiative.
QNLM has signed cooperation agreement with P. P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences to carry out joint technical researches and establish International Joint Research Center for Arctic Research. Laboratory for Marine Geology of QNLM has maintained cooperation with Vietnam. Since 2014, a research team led byResearch Professor Yin Ping has conducted a comparative study on the evolution of the geological environment in the Yangtze River Delta and the Red River Delta with their Vietnam counterpart for five consecutive years. QNLM research team has organized a lot of technical training for the Vietnam researchers. 12 Vietnamese scientific researchers came to China for cooperation and exchange, and two Vietnamese graduate students came to China to study. Laboratory for Marine Geology of QNLM also signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Cambodia on coastal researches in 2017 and pooled researchers and equipment for the strategic planning, resource utilization and environmental protection of the KampongSom Bay. Cambodia benefits a lot from the survey for the sustainable development of its coastal resources and QNLM also accumulated experience in this joint investigation.
In addition, QNLM attaches great emphasis on the cooperation in marine field with the Belt and Road countries. QNLM has successfully launched the Global Ocean Summit (GOS) in 2016, a high-level forum to discuss the challenge of global climate change and socioeconomic development on marine science, which has brought together nearly 70 leaders of marine institutions, universities and organizations from 20 countries, including 13 Belt and Road countries. CLIVAR Open Science Conference held in 2016 has made fruitful achievement through international cooperation and discussion for the scientific research plan of climate change in the next decade, demonstrating China’s leading role in global ecological development. Aoshan Forum, a high-level academic conference initiated by QNLM, has been held for many times focusing on the research of oceans and waters along the Belt and Road. For instance, extensive discussions have been carried out to study the seafloor process and resources in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. In-depth arguments are made to probe into the sedimentary and tectonic evolution processes of the Northeast Indian Ocean and its surrounding areas.
In order to support the Belt and Road Initiative, QNLM takes the lead to establish a series of significant international marine science research programs and major scientific projects. The year 2017 witnessed the launching ceremony of the International Center for Southern Hemisphere Oceans Research (CSHOR), co-established by QNLM and the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), marking a substantial progress of QNLM in the construction of a coordinated, innovative and international marine research network. International cooperation is further enhanced through international marine science research programs such as the “Western Pacific Dynamic Process” project. A joint survey of ocean dynamical environment in the surrounding waters of Maldives has contributed to the construction of the “Maritime Silk Road”. QNLM has been endeavoring to strengthen international cooperation among the Belt and Road countries.
In collaboration with the Belt and Road International League for Peaceful and Friendly Development of Youth, QNLM has organized a series of outreach activities to enhance the cooperation among the Belt and Road countries in many fields such as education, culture, science and technology, sports, and art, carrying forward the Silk Road spirit of peace, cooperation, openness, inclusiveness, mutual learning, and mutual benefit.
In the future, QNLM will continue to work towards its goals by establishing overseas joint research centers and open studios, striving to undertake the Belt and Road Initiative and contributing to promote the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind!
